Hope

The soft crumble of the gravel was the only sound that echoed throughout the empty plain.

Two sets of frightened eyes widened and searched the land every time they heard the noise.

“How much further?” questioned the boy, before rubbing his lips to try and bring some moisture back to them. But to no effect.

A girl, elder of the two looked down before squinting her eyes in the direction ahead. They were far from any civilization and stuck in the middle of the barren land with no sign of food or water. This worried her immensely. Especially seeing the condition of her brother. Two days of walking and swallowing only air had done him no favors. But she knew what had to be done.

They had to find shelter. Fast.

Running was not easy. Not the physical exertion of it; but moving on from the place you called home, or the people you called family and friends. But it had to be done. They had no where to go and running seemed like the only option at the time. She had no regrets. Except maybe being able to carry some more provisions for her little brother. The only family she had left. She did not want him to be taken to a foster home and be separated from the only person who could help keep their memories of their parents alive.

So they packed their bags and left. A perfectly logical move. Neither wanted to be away from the other. But as she thought back, she did not want either of them to die and become a snack for the vultures soaring above. Dying, either by starvation or death, was definitely not part of her plan.

“When all else fails, remember to keep your spirit, your heart, and you hope alive”

Her dear mum always would say these words despite the obstacles they overcame. And she would do that as well. Anything for the one she loved.

Squinting ahead she saw smoke billowing in the far away distance.

“Hope” she whispered marching forwards, fervently hoping for some sign of life, food and water. Not for her; but for the tiny soul she wanted to protect with all her heart.

A Moment to Reflect

As we are almost through to the end of the new year, 2017 I wanted a chance to reflect on all that has happened in my life ever since. It is an important year for me, and I wanted a moment to sit back and see all that I had achieved.

What did I end up realizing? I’ve made some great friends, met some cool people and learnt a lot. But what did I achieve? What significant contribution have I made?

By contribution I mean change. What kind of difference did I make in the world? Even if I forget the whole world, what difference have I made in the lives of people I met?

And while I was down on the dumps regarding it, I realized one thing. I wouldn’t know. Of course how can I? You have to ask the people I met.

We all have certain things we aim to achieve. It’s important to set goals. It keeps us focused. But what happens when we (like me for instance) realize, that it hasn’t happened yet? Or we think we haven’t done anything important?

We fear what we don’t know. So when we don’t know our accomplishment or our success; doesn’t mean it was all for nothing. It’s human nature to compare, but what we must realize is, sometimes people may be comparing it to us. The need to succeed is so ingrained that we don’t realize it can sometimes lead to our downfall as well.

So, whenever you have the sudden anxiety of feeling like you are not making a difference; or if you feel like a failure, always remember this; someone somewhere is thankful to have you in their life. Whether it is your boss, assistant, cook, cleaner, family or a friend, you may be succeeding in the most important thing you are capable of doing.

Bringing joy in someone else’s life.

So if you are feeling down, or feel like a complete loser at times, always remember this. Your success may not always be measured by money or what position you hold in your office. Sometimes it may just be seen by the people you saved. And according to me, that is quite enough.

If you think my posts resonate with you please leave a comment and let me know. I do appreciate all the feedback and the support.

New Chapter – (Story)

IMG_0018_18

She stared at the blank page in front of her as she fiddled around with the ball point pen in her hand.

Writing came to her as easy as breathing. It always had. Despite what everyone else said, she made no effort. She just had to sit down and the words flowed automatically from within her.

But it had to be on paper. There was something refreshing about writing down on a crisp new page; and the feeling of scratching down whatever that didn’t work showed how much effort you put in writing down your thoughts when you saw it after a long time.

But somehow the past few weeks, something within her had held her back. There were no significant changes in her life; just the usual monotony of a normal routine. She was also close to the deadline of presenting her story to the board of directors at the company she worked for.

But she was drawing a blank. Despite the motivation she got from her friends, she had gotten a feeling she was broken. Till now.

Her little niece was out playing in the backyard, welcoming the new season; and she had taken a branch of flowers and kept in on her table. Something about the smell of those freshly plucked flowers, and the screaming of kids outside on the street and in her backyard let the wheels of her brain loose.

As she filled out page after page, she started smiling a bit more.

“It looks like the words were there all along”, her brother said peering down and peeking at the written matter. “Seems like it”, she laughed out swatting her elder brother and closing the door shut behind him.

She called out her manager, proof read everything and scanned the pages to send it to her all the while screaming and dancing about her room; feeling like she just had won the noble peace prize.

“Someone seems to have gotten their mojo back” a quite voice called from the back. Her sister, silently came in and sat down at the end of her bed; showing off her growing baby bump.

She laughed again feeling lighter than ever, remembering a line she had written in her new novel. Something about writing, always made her feel free.

“Sometimes we feel like we lost something, when in fact we just needed sometime to find ourselves. I never was broken. I didn’t lose my talent; I simply needed time to take a step back and take it all in”

And just like that the two sisters stepped out, to welcome the new season along with their entire family.

Flying High – (Story)

A single trickle rolled down his cheek and landed on the back of his hand.

Despite his noiseless attempt of trying and failing to be quiet; a lot of people were looking at him. But did he care? No. Everyone seated was facing the similar grief; the loss of someone they knew and loved. Thinking about what everyone else was thinking, was probably the last thing on his mind.

To be honest, he should have known. Or at least expected it one time or another. It wasn’t morbid thinking; just a reality. When you are in the army, life expectancy is numbered. You’re going to war, and saving your country. Casualties are expected.

But even though, it hurts to lose someone close to you.

Dad. The very thought brought a fresh wave of tears. He no longer had his buddy. No longer someone he could share his problems with. His mum had left him and his little sister a long time ago; so it was just the three of them. But that was enough.

His little sister didn’t know. She was alone at home and this wouldn’t be a way he would choose to let her know.

He often spoke about it. Both of them did. You can’t help but think about the last time you get to see your loved ones and hold them and talk to them; right before leaving.

“If I go, I want you to take me back home. Whatever you can find of me. Any piece, doesn’t matter. I want to be taken home and then cremated”. He was adamant. “And you tell your little sister personally. No telephone calls. My last time, I would like to be with my family. I want to be home”. His words seem oddly far away now.

They had a day before going back home. Everything was fine. Then suddenly, one shot, one life; all gone. With some courage, he glanced up towards the people resting around the coffin. Many were his dad’s friends. His brothers in arms. They had lost their brother; and the grief etched on their face was unbearable to watch. But, somehow it reminded him that he was not the only one suffering.

Sparing a glance at the box, a rush of memories hit him. They were gliding, and his dad seemed intent on making it a special day for the three of them. He was only twelve years old as he and his sister screeched with happiness seeing their dad high
up soaring in the air. He was going to work the next day, and somehow he needed his children to have a good time.

“If I don’t come back, I don’t want you to feel any regret. I did what I had to. Someday you will understand. But always remember, I’ll be flying over your heads looking after you two. Okay?” he had said looking at them directly. They were far too young to understand, but always knew. He mind flashed to his sister.

She will be devastated. She idolized him. She would be heartbroken. But she would accept and understand. Just like he did.

A sharp ray of sunlight got him straight in the eye. He adjusted the his position of seating, avoiding the gazes of everyone in the vicinity, as he looked outside. “Almost home” he thought to himself as he looked at the horizon line.

Just as he thought it, the clouds cleared; he was twelve again seeing his dad gliding beside the plane, now carrying his body.

Sparing no thought around, he broke down in the sorrow of losing his only parent and his best friend.

Hand Made – The Best Kind of Gift

Confession.

I am not big on words. I know right..SHOCKER! Especially considering that I have been writing consistently for over a month now. (Yayy..!) But, even though I may write, I Love You; whether in text or on this blog, I won’t be saying it very often when I talk. I don’t know why, but I’m just not that big on word affection. Sometimes it’s just the gestures that count, doesn’t it?

Anyway, if you are like me or are simply thinking of different ways to show people that you care then why not try something HANDMADE. I don’t mean the stuff which says ‘handmade’ at the store. No. I mean, actually crafting it with your own hands.

Chocolate Butter Biscuits !

Now a days, while a lot of us may talk about materialistic gifts, trust me; the extra effort is worth it. I’d rather receive a thoughtful hand note with a bunch of flowers rather than a printed one. Wouldn’t you?

Sure! A spa day or a makeover sounds fun, but if you add a little personal touch like a greeting or a picture frame then wouldn’t the memory remain stronger even after the day is over?

I’ve been on a creative streak as you guys can tell, (..or maybe not) but with birthdays / special occasions approaching or going by I just decided to put my bit out there; instead of just plain old birthday / special occasion gift ideas.

I guarantee that anything you do, however small, will be met with a smile. (unless they actually do prefer a trip to mall rather than spending the day watching cheesy movies..)

Sometime’s it’s just the thought that counts; but if you have a picture with your mum eating a burnt pancake for breakfast, it sure will make her laugh after all the years rather than an expensive handbag; unless she actually needs it!

As a little tip for you lovely readers; the easiest and most highly appreciated gift you could do is to cook something special for your loved ones. Whether it is their favorite dish or something special you made, give it a try and see how their face lights up!

Let me know your thoughts and how else do you plan on spreading the love and appreciating those around you. Do you have any other hand-made gift ideas? Would you guys like some more gift ideas for what you can create?
